Internet of Things – IoT – Glossary of terms

BootstrapA “factory-set” SIM profile applied to an eUICC to allow it to connect out-of-the-box.
CC-NDCCountry Code-National Destination Code: Identifies the country and the PLMN (see below) or part of it.
CSRCustomer Service Representative.
EIDeUICC identification number.
eUICCEmbedded Universal Circuit Card. A container of multiple SIM profiles for one device.
FallbackWhen an eUICC device loses connectivity it temporarily “falls back” to a pre-selected SIM profile to maintain connectivity.
HLRHome Location Register
HSSHome Subscriber Service: Responsible for keeping the subscriber profile information and location information.
GPRSGeneral Packet Radio Service: 2g/3g mobile data service.
ICCIDIntegrated Circuit Card Identifier. A SIM card contains its unique serial number (ICCID). ICCIDs are also printed on the SIM card during a personalisation process.
IMEIInternational Mobile Equipment Identity. A number used to identify a piece of equipment which uses mobile networks.
IMSIInternational Mobile Subscriber Identity: A number that uniquely identifies every user of a cellular network.
KPIKey Performance Indicator. Data used to indicate the performance of equipment or people.
MCCMobile Country Code.
MNCMobile Network Code.
MNOMobile Network Operator.
MSISDNMobile Station International Subscriber Directory Number. The phone number associated with a SIM.
OTAOver The Air. Refers to operations done via the mobile network, remotely.
PLMNPublic Land Mobile Network: A combination of wireless communication services offered by a specific operator in a specific country. Often referred to as a cellular network.
Roaming ProfileControls which networks a SIM can connect to when away from the home network.
SIMSubscriber Identity Module: Provides a means to securely store the IMSI number and its related key, which are used to identify and authenticate subscribers.
SIM ProfileOne or more profiles assigned to an eUICC each with similar functions to a traditional SIM.
SKUStock Keeping Unit – Used to categorise and “bundle” SIMs, Profiles and eUICC for advanced and simpler ordering and stock control.
SMSShort Message Service. Also known as a text message.
SteeringSteering of roaming, or “preferred roaming”, is the process by which a mobile operator decides which partner their subscribers will use whilst roaming.
SubscriberThe subscriber is the person or organisation which pays for the roaming service, and so a subscriber may have many SIMs.
TADIGTransferred Account Data Interchange Group: A unique number identifying network operators in a mobile network. Made up of a 3-character country code a 2-character operator/company identifier.
ULUpdate Location: For 2g/3g networks.
UL GPRSUpdate Location GPRS: For 2g/3g networks.
UL RUpdate Location: For 4g networks.
Visiting OperatorThe operator of the network which the roaming SIM.
